Public Statement: Women’s Organizations Condemn Junta’s Forced Conscription Law in Myanmar

We, the undersigned women’s organizations and advocates for human rights, equality, justice, and democracy, strongly condemn the recent announcement by the Myanmar military junta (also known as the State Administration Council) regarding the implementation of the People’s Military Service Law.
STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

To “inspire inclusion,” we must actively build an environment that will be conducive to it. Toward that inclusion, ethnic and religious minority women have long worked to end the impunity that for decades enabled the commission of atrocity crimes against them. Today, people across the country follow these women in their fight for a truly inclusive federal democracy. The world too should be inspired by the women of Myanmar, and act in their favor immediately.

We, Women’s Peace Network, welcome the United Nations (UN) Security Council’s recent adoption of a resolution on Myanmar, or resolution 2669 (2022). As was urged in our previous letters to the Council following the February 1, 2021 attempted coup, this resolution highlights our calls for the immediate release of the over 13,000 political prisoners; respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; upholding of democratic institutions; need for safe and unhindered humanitarian access; and immediate end to all forms of violence in the country.

We, Women’s Peace Network, are horrified to hear that on November 11, a group of Myanmar military soldiers gang raped a 27-year-old ethnic Chin woman of Akllui Village, Tedim Township, Chin State in front of her husband, assaulted him, and plundered their home; and further gang raped her 30-year-old pregnant sister-in-law.
